National Friendship Day, celebrated on August 7, 2022 is a time to reflect on the ways the platonic people in our lives enrich it with their humor, humanity, and in some cases willingness to post bail.
The word friend derives from the Old English frēon, “to love, like, honor, set free.” The etymology is apt. Often, we are our best selves with our best friends. Cut loose of the oppressive ties of family or the heightened intensity of romantic entanglements, we can love them for free and in full.
Originally conceived as a marketing ploy by Hallmark to sell cards during the holiday scarce months of summer, National Friendship Day went on to be sanctioned by Congress and celebrated by pals across the country.
While friendships are born of luck, circumstance and even desperation, our style of camaraderie is informed by astrology. In honor of this contrived holiday and noble cause, we’re unpacking friendship through the zodiac. Read on to learn more about what kind of bestie you are based on your sign.
ARIES (March 21 – April 19)
Impulsive purveyors of fun, Aries are adept at pushing people out of their comfort zones and into all manner of high jinks. The Aries friend teaches you to burn the maps, forego the plans and lean fully into spontaneity and at least halfway out of the window of a moving car. Fireworks and felonies, it’s never a dull moment with a ram at the helm.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20)
Taurus folks love to pretend they don’t have any feelings which frees up a lot of time for them to console others. Bulls are great at listening without judgement and truly know how to feed people in the ways they need to be fed, whether it be salt of the earth advice or an obscene charcuterie board.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 20)
One sign that’s never at a loss for words or wormholes is Gemini. Ruled by Mercury, planet of exchange, Gemini has a mind and a mouth that never cease which makes them bad at keeping secrets and great at telling jokes. The real boon of Gemini friendship is that you’ll always learn something by being around them and while they are the flakiest sign in the zodiac, they’re also the most forgiving.
CANCER (June 21 – July 22)
In the zodiac, Cancer represents the mother archetype and within the friend group they take on the role of den moms, always ensuring everyone feels included, cherished and gets home safe when they black out on margaritas. While they internalize a lot of what happens to them, they are willing to go to great lengths to defend or protect their pals. Easily wounded and passive aggressive when wronged, Cancers expect care and consideration in exchange for their dedicated efforts.
LEO (July 23 – August 22)
Leos are great for morale. This fire sign rules the fifth house of creativity and the inner child and Leos urge their friends to indulge in play without apology and self-love as self-care. On a benefits level, there is no sign more dedicated to winning at gift giving or taking a flattering photo.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22)
Preternatural problem solvers, Virgos are blessed/cursed with the ability to see with a keen eye what is best for others; probiotic combinations, romantic partners, fitness regimens, whether yoga pants are appropriate at a work function etc. Trouble arises when Virgos veer into delivering advice and constructive criticism unsolicited. Refreshingly chill in a crisis, Virgos can be counted on to execute a plan, drive a getaway car, suture a wound or soothe a pal in the dark heart of a bad trip, no praise or payment required.
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22)
If love is about aiding and abetting, Libra is the finest friend in the zodiac. Too indecisive to take a moral stand, you can come to them with your darkest secrets and most controversial confessions and they won’t blush or banish you. Naturally diplomatic, they keep things copacetic in the group chat and wield their charm to get free drinks and room upgrades. The frustrating fact about Libra is that they refuse to choose sides and will stay friends with your ex no matter how bitter your breakup.
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21)
There’s no sign better equipped to get you through a dark night of the soul than Scorpio. You can’t scare them or scare them away. They keep few close confidantes and while the best of them forgive, the whole of them never, ever forget the wrongs done to them. They take vengeance seriously and are willing to wage war and cast wrath on behalf of those they love. If you are lucky enough to have a Scorpio friend, pay homage with loyalty and the occasional offering of blood and snakeskin accessories.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21)
The bon vivant of the zodiac wheel, Sagittarius energy is infectiously optimistic. Archers are adept at convincing their friends to live full and free; pants off, music loud, dice rolled. These are “yes” people who rarely refuse an invitation to the unknown and for this reason they make for great wedding dates and criminal accomplices. Never the type to sugarcoat or soften, they deliver the truth as they see it whether you ask for it or not.
CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19)
Capricorn does nothing without first considering the cost/benefit of their effort. If a Capricorn counts you as a friend it means they have deemed you a worthy investment. of their time. Not big on long proclamations of affection or drying your tears over an ex they never thought was worthy, Caps show their devotion in practical ways. They will pick you up from the airport, help you advocate for a raise and convince you that you absolutely deserve a wildly expensive camel hair jacket and are absolutely capable of anything.
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18)
Aquarius rules the eleventh house of friends and community and the water bearers network of allies and acquaintance is vast, varied and wonderfully weird. The Aquarius asks only that their friends be interesting, open to the possibility that they have been right all along, and forgiving of their need to cancel plans and not call back because being an evil/brilliant genius is hard, isolating work. Able to detach and view situations with the emotional distance of a Hubble space telescope, Aquarians make for excellent advisors.
PISCES (February 19 – March 20)
Pisces is a tender heart and a safe place to land. Intuitive AF they know that a cuddle is curative whether a pal knows they need one or not. Mutability is the name of the game here and Pisces can party if you need to celebrate or disassociate or they can hold you while you cry. The beauty of a fish friend is that they will always validate your feelings, never rush you to resolution and usually keep a well stocked drug collection at the ready.
