With the release of Hocus Pocus 2 just over a week away, a new glimpse at the iconic Sanderson Sisters has been offered via newly-released character posters from Disney Plus.

Hocus Pocus 2 was first announced in 2020, with the original cast reuniting for the Disney Plus sequel. The original Hocus Pocus was released nearly 30 years ago, in July of 1993. Starring Omri Katz as Max Dennison, Thora Birch as Dani Dennison, and Vinessa Shaw as Allison Watts, the film centered on Katz's Max reawakening witches who were hanged back during the Salem Witch Trials. A non-believer of magic, Max lights the black flame candle in the Sanderson home, which is said to revive the sisters should a virgin be the one to light the candle on Halloween night.

In a series of tweets, Disney Plus debuted three new character posters featuring the Sanderson Sisters as they'll appear in Hocus Pocus 2. The posters start out with Kathy Najimy as Mary Sanderson, the red-clad, beehive-wearing middle sister who can smell children. Next up is Bette Midler as the head witch, Winifred Sanderson, an enchantress in green with an Elizabethan-style updo. And last, but not least, there's Sarah Jessica Parker as Sarah Sanderson, the most dim-witted and purple witch who's back to run amok.

The original Hocus Pocus went from box office flop to cult classic, as years of reruns during October have turned the film into an iconic staple of the holiday season. As more and more new fans were drawn into the campy classic, with its catchy rendition of "I Put a Spell on You" and friendly zombies named Billy (Doug Jones, who will also return in the sequel), Disney began to see the possibility of a sequel. Though the original young actors will not be reprising their roles, the witches all happily signed on, and it seems they all have a soft spot for their roles in the film, particularly Midler, who has dressed up as Winifred Sanderson for Halloween in the past.

The sequel shows a lot of promise. A new trailer shows that the film knows what fans want from the Sanderson Sisters, with plenty of gags and references hearkening back to the original film, which featured plenty of adult jokes that flew over kids' heads but kept their parents entertained. A sequel has been discussed plenty of times over the years, so it's likely that this film isn't a rushed production, but a product of years of talks and ideas.

With a release date of late September, the film is coming out just in time for the Halloween season. The original film is available to watch on Disney Plus, so it's a great time to plan a double-feature movie night as well.

Hocus Pocus 2 releases September 30, 2022, on Disney Plus.
